Owlz lose it in seventh
August 18, 2006 - Pioneer League (PL)
Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
Down 7-4, Billings rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to a one run victory over Orem Thursday night in Montana.
After a Peter Bourjos solo homer in the top of the inning propelled the Owlz to a three-run lead, Billings led off the bottom half with two doubles and single, scoring twice to pull within one run.
Still with nobody out, the next batter would walk to put runners on first and second. Cleanup hitter Danny Dorn then laid a bunt down the third base line in an attempt to move the runners into scoring position. P.J. Phillips fielded ball cleanly but threw high of first baseman Abel Nieves, allowing the tying run to score.
With runners on second and third following the throwing error, the next batter popped up for the first out of the inning. Manager Tom Kotchman then decided to intentionally walk Logan Parker to load the bases.
The next hitter Tony Esquer bounced a one-hopper to Philips at third. PJ threw home for the first out but then Scott Knazek sailed his toss to first into right field, failing to complete the inning-ending double play and allowing the go-ahead run to come in.
The Owlz would leave runners on second and third in the eighth and be mowed down in order in the last inning as Billings preserved the 8-7 win.
The game was tied at 4 in the top of third when the skies opened up. A forty-five minute rain delay ensued, knocking out both starting pitchers.
Following the soak, the Owlz would get single runs in the top of the third and fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
PJ Connelly surrendered just one hit over the third through sixth innings, keeping Billings off the scoreboard until he was replaced in the seventh.
After being shutout last night, Orem jumped on the board with two runs in the top of the first. Following singles from Ryan Mount and Bourjos, Chris Pettit belted an RBI groundout and Tyler Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
Billings would get the same number of runs off Owlz starter Bobby Cassevah in the bottom of the inning.
The second inning would also feature a pair of two-run frames. The Owlz got RBIs from Bourjos and another from Pettit to once again grab a two run lead. However, Billings pulled even with a couple of run scoring singles in the bottom half.
With the loss, the Owlz have now dropped the first two of the four game set. Game three is tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. from Cobb Field.
