Owlz Fail to Keep Pace with Raptors in Loss
August 21, 2016 - Pioneer League (PL)
Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
OREM, Utah-John Schuknecht hit his second home run in as many nights and Brennan Morgan had a 2-for-4 night with a two-run homer, but it was not enough for the Orem Owlz as the Ogden Raptors evened the four-game series with a 10-4 victory. Ogden was on Orem pitching all night and scattered 16 hits, including three triples.
Orem (31-27, 9-11) got on the board early as L.J. Kalawaia led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to left, then came in to score from second on a double to center by Nick Flair.
The Raptors (28-30, 11-9) broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with four consecutive singles to start the inning. With the bases still loaded, Jared Walker came in to score on a wild pitch. Brandon Montgomery blew the game open with a two-run triple to left-center field for a 5-1 Ogden lead. Montgomery came in to score one batter later on a sacrifice fly to right by Mitchell Hansen.
However, the Owlz responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of their own. Morgan launched a two-run homer to left field, then Schuknecht immediately followed with a solo home run to nearly the same spot as Morgan's. The 6-4 deficit was as close as the Owlz could get.
Orem logged just two of their seven hits through the rest of the game and failed to get a runner to second base.
The Raptors slammed the door on the Owlz in the top of the ninth as they tagged reliever Doug Willey with four runs on five hits, including a pair of triples to center.
The Owlz went down in order in the ninth as Schuknect struck out swinging to end the game.
The Owlz and Raptors will take a day to rest on Sunday, but pick the series back up on Monday at the Home of the Owlz with the first pitch scheduled at 7:05 p.m. MT. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
