August 11, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
Rockford, IL- John Schultz launched the sixth pitch of the game over the right field wall, Dane Phillips drove in four for the second time this season, Jeremy Nowak pitched in two separate two-out RBI singles and Brett Marshall went seven innings of one run baseball to propel the Evansville Otters (47-26) to an 8-1 win over the Rockford Aviators (31-42) on Tuesday night.
Schultz blasted his 13th home run of the season, the first leadoff home run of the season for the Otters, to start the game and the Otters never looked back. They put another un up on the board later in the top of the first to push their lead to 2-0 when Jeremy Nowak singled to right with two outs. Although Brett Marshall hit the first batter of the game in the bottom of the first inning and allowed him to come home on a double, he would settle down and the Otters offense kept pouring on the runs.
Dane Phillips, who had driven in four runs in a game back on the 17th of July, got halfway to that total in the second inning when he came to the plate with two men on (JD Dorgan and John Schultz) and pummeled a ball towards center, over the head of the centerfielder for a two-run double and an Otters 4-1 lead. With Marshall keeping the Aviators at bay in the second and third innings, the Otters took advantage and increased their lead in the fourth.
JD Dorgan started the fourth inning the same way he started the second, with a single, and after Schultz walked for the second time on the night, Josh Allen doubled into the right-center field gap to give the Otters a 5-1 lead. Phillips matched his RBI total from July 17th with a single to left, driving in both Allen and Schultz, and the Otters were comfortably in front 7-1. Marshall continued to dismantle the Aviators, and the Otters scored another un in the seventh on a double by Nik Balog and a two-out RBI single by Nowak for his second RBI of the game.
Marshall ended up throwing seven innings for the Otters, allowing just one run on five hits while walking two and striking out three. He turned the ball over to newly signed left-handed pitcher Blaine Howell and Howell did not disappoint; after walking a pair in the eighth inning, he induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of a jam and then struck out the side in the ninth to end the game for the Otters 8-1 victory.
John Schultz's home run was his 13th of the season and 42nd run driven in; both of which lead the Otters. Josh Allen picked up a pair of hits, driving in one and scoring on while Phillips finished with three hits on the night and four RBI. Jeremy Nowak drove in two on his two hits and JD Dorgan scored twice after both of his base knocks.
Marshall improves to 2-1 on the season with his quality outing, dropping his ERA to 2.89, giving up just the one run in seven innings of work. The Otters and Aviators will take on each other again tomorrow night with Tyler Vail (8-3, 4.83) going up against Tony Rizzotti (6-2, 3.22). Game time tomorrow is set for 6:35 pm CDT with the pregame show featuring Jake Donnelly starting at 6:15 pm CDT.
