Erie Otters News Release
A game filled with fights and penalties was not meant to be for the Erie Otters as they lost their third game in a row Thursday night to the Windsor Spitfires, 5-3.
Fans in Windsor were treated to four fights and a combined 62 penalty minutes between the two squads in what could set up to be a physical rematch in Erie on October 29.
Derek Holden collected his first goal of the season with the Otters on the power play. Mike Cazzola fed Holden with a pretty between the legs, no look pass and the defenseman tapped the puck in at 12:16 to put the Otters on the board.
Just over a minute later, Jeremy Gottzmann put the Otters up by a pair after a goalmouth scramble for his first goal of the season. Although it appeared that Matt Paton had whacked the puck in, Gottzmann stayed near the crease and received credit for the goal at 13:19.
It took just 22 seconds for the Spitfires to tie the game on goals by Zack Kassian at 14:03 and Nick Czinder at 14:25. Windsor outshot Erie after 20 minutes of play, 13-11.
The second period started off with a fight off the opening draw between overagers Mitch Gaulton and Kyle Tarini, with neither player landing any punches. It set the tone for a physical period, as the Otters found themselves in penalty trouble. Stephen Johnston scored on the two-man advantage for Windsor at 5:22 to give his team the lead.
Soon after, there were a pair of fights. Matt Paton squared off against Mike MacIntyre, but the main event involved a pair of first rounders from the 2010 OHL Priority Selection. Otters forward Chris Marchese dealt several punishing blows against Grant Webermin in an attempt to swing momentum into the Otters' direction.
Marchese would tie the game on the power play at 5:04 after finishing off a rebound from a Tyler Hostetter shot. The goal was the rookie's second of the season.
Unfortunately, the game was not tied for long as Mike MacIntyre blasted a one-timer from the top of the left circle at 7:59 after the conclusion of a Windsor power play for the game winner. Zack Kassian added an empty netter late to seal the win for Windsor.
The Otters complete their road trip Friday night in London against the Knights at 7:30 p.m. The broadcast begins at 7:15 with the Toyota Pregame Show on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan and online at ottershockey.com courtesy of the James H. Cross Company.
