Erie Otters News Release

The Erie Otters (27-24-1-1) saw a late lead slip away on the road as the Ottawa 67's scored twice in 48 seconds to take a 4-3 decision at Rona Centre Friday night.

Tyler Toffoli scored on the power play with 4:20 remaining to tie the game at three, and a lucky bounce to Dalton Smith allowed him to fire the game-winner into the net with 3:32 to go in regulation.

Reigning OHL Player of the Week Brett Thompson continued his hot streak with a goal 3:12 into the game. Phil Varone's shot from the slot left a juicy rebound for Thompson, who fired it through the glove side of Petr Mrazek for his 35th goal of the season.

The Otters held the slim lead until there was 3:46 remaining in the second period, when Jon Carnevale broke through for the 67's to tie the game up heading into the third period.

The third period was markedly different compared to the first two periods, as the offense came alive for both teams. Shawn Szydlowski scored on the power play with his 30th goal on the season at 2:32 to give the Otters a 2-1 lead. Shane Prince tied the game at two on a wraparound goal at 5:42.

Eighteen seconds later, Mike Cazzola scored on a breakaway for his 13th goal of the season, making it a 3-2 game for Erie. It appeared the Otters would hold on until the 67's picked up their first power play of the game with 6:05 remaining, and Toffoli tying the game near the end of the man advantage. Smith then netted the game-winner to hand the Otters an unlucky loss.

Cazzola and Szydlowski each had a goal and an assist for the Otters, while Varone dished out two assists.

The Otters continue on the road to Belleville Saturday night to battle the Bulls at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to all the action on Jet Radio 1400 or online at ottershockey.com (courtesy of the James H. Cross Company).
