Oshawa Generals News Release
OSHAWA, ON - The Erie Otters came to the Shwa for their annual visit looking to take two points from your Oshawa Generals. Although they had a losing record in their past 7 games (3-0-1-3), they still picked up at least one point in the standings in each of those games.
Today's pregame ceremony recognized Generals rookie Brett Harrison and Otters forward Connor Lockhart for playing in the World U17 Hockey Challenge. Generals President and Governor Rocco Tullio presented the players with commemorative plaques.
Generals Starting 5
Forward: Oliver Suni - Brett Neumann - Serron Noel
Defense: William Ennis - Nico Gross
Starting Goalies:
Oshawa Generals - Andrew MacLean
Erie Otters - Daniel Murphy
1st Period:
Andrew MacLean played strong highlighted by a series of saves on an Otters powerplay early in the period.
The Otters held the puck in the Generals zone for a majority of the period, but the Generals were not without their chances. One from a breakaway from Captain Kyle MacLean he wristed into the pads of Murphy. Another from a tic-tac-toe passing play in which 4 Generals touched the puck on a break in resulting in a stopped shot from rookie Liam Whittaker. And of course leading scorer Brett Neumann had his chances drummed up from his incredible speed.
Oliver Suni had a strong first period generating offense with crisp passes and played well on the Generals second powerplay unit. Defensively, last year's recipient of the General's Best Defenseman Award - William Ennis - showed he is only getting better. Ennis was finishing his checks and clearing the crease well.
The period ended with a blank scoreboard, with the Otters outshooting the Generals 18-8.
2nd Period:
The Otters started the period on the powerplay and made quick work of it only needing 27 seconds for Whitby-born Chad Yetman to squeak a wrist shot past Andrew MacLean. Only 2 minutes later, the Otters were at it again Brendan Sellan picked up the puck on an Otters break in. Sellan carried it around the net and finished with a wraparound that banked in off of MacLean's pads to increase the deficit to 2 goals.
While the Otters were the first on the board, the Generals still held their own. Whitby-born Jacob Winterton had a couple of good shifts digging out the pucks in the corners and keeping the puck in Generals possession. Winterton was rewarded by spending some time on the line with Neumann
On an Otters powerplay Yetman would strike "yet" again. The goal was on a cross ice pass to a one-timer into an open net. 3-0 Otters.
Neumann would strike for the Generals scoring his 100th OHL goal on a stellar pass from Suni and the Generals would bring the game to within 2.
Although MacLean let 3 slip past him he still played well throughout the period. The Otters had an abundance of chances and MacLean still made huge saves. Including several sprawling saves and a great stop on a breakaway shot from Hayden Fowler.
3rd Period:
The Generals knew it was crunch time to start the 3rd and they elevated their game. Neumann grabbed the puck in the Generals zone and rushed it up ice. Just after crossing the Otters blue line he passed to Suni who rocketed a wrist shot past the short side of Murphy.
Nico Gross seemed to have tied the game with a rocket of a wrist shot. But after a lengthy review process it was deemed that Serron Noel made contact with the Otters goalie and the goal was disallowed. On the faceoff just after Gross' disallowed goal, the Otters rushed the puck up and into the Generals' zone and Chad Yetman dented the twine for his third of the game. 4-2 Otters.
The Yetman goal sucked the wind out of the Generals' sails and the life out of the building. The Generals pulled MacLean for the final 2 minutes of the game but the extra attacker wasn't enough to get a puck past Murphy.
Final Score:
Oshawa Generals (2) - Erie Otters (4)
94.9 The Rock
3 Stars:
1 - Chad Yetman (3 Goals, 5 shots)
2 - Jamie Drysdale (4 Assists, +2, 4 Shots)
