OTTAWA - The New Jersey Jackals gave the Ottawa Champions many opportunities to grab their 32nd victory of the 2018 season Thursday night, and they seized their chance. Ottawa capitalized on defensive miscues to complete a three-run comeback and defeat their opponents 5-4.
The win gives Ottawa the series victory over New Jersey, and catapults them into a tie for fifth in the Can-Am League. Ottawa has one more win than the Jackals after the game, so they own the tiebreaker.
Champions manager Hal Lanier liked his team's hustle on the basepaths, which he says gave them the victory.
"You have to give credit to DH Sebastien Boucher beating a ball out, INF Tyler Brown scoring on that play," Lanier said, referencing the game-tying run in the seventh.
With the score at 4-3 New Jersey, the Champions had the aforementioned Brown on second. Boucher grounded a ball third base side, but the Jackals couldn't make the play. Brown turned around third and scored to make it 4-4.
RHP Pete Perez then balked with Boucher on second, and an E6 from INF Carlos Triunfel put Ottawa up 5-4.
In the eighth, LHP Scott Maine came on for the four-out save and delivered. It was his 11th of the season, and gives him five saves in his last five chances.
The first-place Sussex County Miners come to the ballpark for the final time this year on the weekend. Tickets for all Champions home games are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
