Miners Walk off Aigles Again

August 2, 2018 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex County Miners News Release

Augusta, NJ - the Sussex County Miners (49-20) trailed the Trois-Rivieres Aigles (35-33) from the third batter of the game up until the last batter of the game, yet found a way to pull out a 3-2 come-from-behind victory to collect their sixth win in a row and their fourteenth consecutive win at home, one shy of their own Can-Am League record for most consecutive wins at home.

After back-to-back run scoring doubles by Taylor Brennan and Kevin Cornelius gave the Aigles a 2-0 lead, Miners starter Kenny Koplove would settle in and spin a gem for the Miners. Koplove would throw a complete nine innings for Sussex County, the first complete game of his career. Koplove would surrender only four hits after the first inning, for a total of seven hits allowed in all. Those two runs in the first would the only scoring allowed by Koplove, who walked just one batter and struck out five.

Offensively, the Miners were stifled for eight innings, scratching out only six hits in that span. But the never-quit mentality of the Miners would work their way on base in the ninth. Jayce Ray would walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth. After a fly out and a fielder's choice, Nick Zaharion would come up with his second big hit in as many games with a two-out double. Christian Correa would walk to load the bases, setting the stage for Breland Almadova. The Sussex County right fielder would take a 3-1 Angel Rincon pitch deep into right field and off the wall. Connor Crane, pinch-runner Jarred Mederos, and Correa would all score to walk the game off for the Miners and set off a jubilant scene afterwards.

Koplove's complete game win ran his record to 6-3 on the season, while Rincon got saddled with the loss and dropped to 2-2 on the season. The two teams will play game two of the day/night doubleheader at 7:05 pm tonight.
