Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC- The Hickory Crawdads defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 4-3 on Tuesday night in the series opener.
The Dash got a run across in the first but the 'Dads rallied to tie it in the second. Daniel Mateo doubled down the right field line. He stole third, his 28th steal of the year, and a throwing error by the catcher on the play allowed him to score.
Winston-Salem scored in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
The Crawdads responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. Maximo Acosta singled and Abimelec Ortiz blasted his 32nd homerun (25 since joining the Crawdads) to make it 3-2. The RBIs gave Ortiz 98 on the season.
They added on an insurance run in the fifth to bring the score to 4-2. Alejandro Osuna singled to lead off the inning and Maximo hit a one-out double to the centerfield wall to bring Osuna around to score.
Winston-Salem scored again in the sixth to cut the Crawdads' lead to one.
The Crawdads ended the game with a pickoff as a runner tried to steal third.
The magic number for the 'Dads to clinch the second half Southern Division title is down to three. At the conclusion of the Crawdads game, Bowling Green was tied with the Greensboro Grasshoppers but the game was suspended in the sixth.
The series will continue tomorrow evening with Around the World Night and Kids Win Wednesday by Arby's.
