Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds (23-16) held on late to top the Nashville Sounds (Athletics) 2-1, Monday afternoon at AutoZone park.
Tyler O'Neill had another big day at the plate for the Redbirds. The slugging outfielder hit solo home runs in the second and third innings to provide Memphis the only two runs they would need. It marked the third time this season that O'Neill has gone deep twice in a game, and the second time he has homered in three-straight games this season.
O'Neill now has 13 home runs through his first 27 games this season. He did not hit his 13th home run until his 81st game last season. Since being acquired in a trade in a trade with Seattle on July 21 last year, O'Neill has slugged 25 home runs in 64 regular-season games with the Redbirds.
O'Neill's home runs backed Memphis starter, Dakota Hudson, who threw five strong innings to capture his fourth win of the season. He allowed just one run on three hits and six walks, while striking out four batters. The lone run he gave up came from the bat of former Redbird Anthony Garcia, who hit his seventh home run of the season in the fourth inning.
Edward Mujica came in to relieve Hudson in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no outs. The righty notched two-straight strikeouts before getting the final batter to fly out and end the threat.
Ryan Sherriff and Preston Guilmet combined to throw the final three frames. They combined to allow just one hit, while striking out five batters.
The Redbirds and Sounds will play the series finale tomorrow at 11:05 a.m. The Redbirds will have an off-day on Wednesday before traveling to Colorado Springs for a four-game set beginning Thursday.
