Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
DENVER, Colo. - Right-hander and number nine-rated Milwaukee Brewers prospect Freddy Peralta made history Sunday afternoon just up the road from where he has compiled a league-leading five wins and 46 strikeouts over 34 2/3 innings with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
In his Major League debut on Mother's Day, at 21 years old, with his family in attendance to watch him pitch professionally for the first time, Peralta tossed five and two-thirds innings against the second-best squad in the National League West at Coors Field in Denver, striking out 13 batters while taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Not only did his 13 strikeouts set a new Brewers rookie record, but the Dominican Republic native is also just the fifth pitcher since 1908 to strike out 13 or more in his Major League debut [Freddy Peralta 13, 2018 Stephen Strasburg 14, 2010 J.R. Richard 15, 1971 Karl Spooner 15, 1954 Cliff Melton 13, 1937].
The most recent pitchers to log double-digit strikeouts in a Major League debut before Peralta are: Matt Harvey 11, 2012; Thomas Diamond 10, 2010; Stephen Strasburg 14, 2010.
The two-time Minor League All-Star was acquired by the Brewers from the Seattle Mariners in a 2015 trade with right-handed pitchers Carlos Herrera and Daniel Missaki in exchange for first baseman Adam Lind.
The Sky Sox continue into game three of the four-game series against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Security Service Field tomorrow at 6:40 p.m. Following the four games against the Dodgers, the Sky Sox will welcome to town the Memphis Redbirds, top affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
