One-Run Loss Sends Voyagers to Series Defeat

Helena, MT - The Voyagers scored a late run to level the game before the Brewers plated a single tally in the bottom of the eighth for a series-clinching 6-5 victory Friday night at Kindrick Legion Field.

Great Falls (32-37, 10-21) finished the season series at 5-11 against Helena. The Voyagers dropped to 12-23 on the road, and they went 1-7 at Kindrick this season. Helena (34-36, 17-15) has won three in a row and improved to 19-16 at home.

The Brewers started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Brice Turang reached base with a one-out single to left. Turang later stole second and scored on a Daid Fry RBI single to left. The Voyagers sent seven men to the plate and scored twice in the top of the second to move in front. Amado Nunez led off the inning with a walk. Alex Destino doubled to right-center. A two-run single to left-center by Micah Coffey brought both runners home for a 2-1 lead.

Both sides scored runs in the third. Great Falls sent seven men to the plate but only scored once. Lenyn Sosa reached with a one-out single to left. With two outs, Amado Nunez reached base on a dropped third strike. Alex Destino followed with a walk. Ryan Fitzpatrick brought the run home on an infield RBI single to short and it was 3-1. In the home half of the third, Helena's Je'Von Ward led off with a single to left-center. Brice Turang then tied the contest with a two-run opposite field home run deep to left.

The Voyagers reclaimed the lead with a run in the fourth. Jhoandro Alfaro singled to lead off the frame. Romy Gonzalez made it 4-3 with a run-scoring double to left. The Brewers clapped right back with two runs in the fifth for a 5-4 lead. Je'Von Ward started the rally with a double to left. Brice Turang walked. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. David Fry stayed hot at the plate with a two-run double served into left-center.

Both teams scored once each in the eighth. Great Falls tied the game at 5-5 with a Lenyn Sosa RBI single to right that scored Maiker Feliz. Feliz reached with a one-out single to center. In the bottom of the eighth, Connor McVey led off with a base hit to left for Helena. Jesus Lujano singled to right with one out. After a walk of Je'Von Ward loaded the bases, Brice Turang reached base with a fielder's choice RBI grounder to second that failed to produce an inning-ending double play. The Voyagers put the tying run on in the ninth but left him stranded at second base to end the game.

Helena outhit Great Falls 14-to-13. Je'Von Ward and LG Castillo collected three hits apiece. Brice Turang posted two hits with three RBIs and three runs. David Fry drove in three on two hits and finished the series with nine RBIs. Alex Destino bagged two doubles for the Voyagers with three total hits. Lenyn Sosa and Jhoandro Alfaro both had two hits.

Chad Whitmer picked up the win in relief. Whitmer (3-2) went two-thirds of an inning and gave up one earned run on three hits with one strikeout. Austin Conway took the loss. Conway pitched an inning and allowed one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and two walks. Michael Mediavilla notched his fourth save with one hit allowed.
