Olt Returns in Style as Birds Roll 7-2

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mike Olt's broken collarbone has healed and he celebrated his return to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' lineup the only way he knows how. In his first game since June 6, the third baseman rocketed a two-run home run in the third inning and added an RBI double in the fifth in support of Chad Bell as the Pelicans beat the Kinston Indians at BB&T Coastal Field on Saturday.

Olt suffered a broken collarbone in a home plate collision with Winston-Salem catcher Jason Bour on June 6 and in his absence, a Pelicans team that was ten games over .500 with him went 33-33 without him. Playing third base tonight and batting fifth, he walked on four pitches in his first plate appearance in the first inning.

Once he got a pitch to hit in the third, he crushed it deep over the bleachers in left field for a two-run homer. The shot was his 11th of the season and despite missing 66 games that total still leads all Myrtle Beach hitters.

The offense picked up right where they left off from Friday night's 15-run output by posting three runs in the first inning against Kinston starter Mike Rayl (1-2). Travis Adair cracked a solo homer, his fourth for the Pelicans this year. After Jared Prince singled and Andrew Clark and Olt walked, Vinny DiFazio doubled to left to bring home a pair and make it a 3-0 game.

That would be all the scoring Bell (3-1) needed, as he shut down the K-Tribe for seven innings, allowing one run on six hits. The southpaw equaled a career-high with the seven-inning outing and he tied a season high with eight strikeouts while walking only one.

Along with Olt's third-inning home run and fifth-inning run-scoring double, the Birds added more insurance in the seventh. David Paisano's infield single, his third hit of the game, brought home Clark, who walked three times and reached in all four of his plate appearances.

Trevor Hurley worked a scoreless eighth in relief of Bell and despite walking in a run in the ninth he slammed the door and secured the victory for Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans have taken two of the first three games of this four-game set.

Myrtle Beach aims for a series victory in the finale tomorrow night as southpaw Miguel De Los Santos (5-3, 2.83) goes for the Pelicans against Kinston righty Clayton Cook (8-8, 3.86). Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
