Norfolk Tides News Release
Garrett Olson allowed four hits in six shutout innings, pitching the Tides past the Columbus Clippers 5-2 in front of 8,569 fans at Harbor Park Saturday night.
Olson walked one and struck out eight in route to picking up his fifth straight win in a Norfolk uniform. The 23-year-old southpaw struck out the side in both the 2nd and 5th innings, and faced just three batters over the minimum in his six innings of work.
Olson is now 5-0 with a 1.38 ERA (6-ER, 39.0-IP) in his last five starts with the Tides, having struck out 44 and walked 15 over that stretch.
Tides reliever Steve Green relieved Olson and hurled two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the 9th. George Lombard led off the final frame with a double, and one-out later scored on a home run to right field off the bat of Kory Casto. After Larry Broadway drew a two-out walk from Green, Norfolk summoned closer Cory Doyne from the bullpen, and Doyne struck out Abraham Nunez on three pitches for his league leading 29th save of the year.
The Tides got on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning, as Val Majewski singled and came around to score on a triple by Mike Cervenak. Terry Tiffee then followed Cervenak's triple with a double to right off of Clippers' starter Collin Balester (0-1), giving the Tides a 2-0 lead.
Norfolk doubled their lead in the 6th inning, as Tiffee plated Majewski with an RBI groundout and Alberto Castillo drove home J.R. House with a sacrifice fly to put the Tides up 4-0.
With his two runs driven in, Tiffee has now collected 16 RBI over his last 14 games, and the switch-hitting third baseman is hitting .338 (21-for-62) in the month of July.
Balester took the loss for Columbus, yielding four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. The 21-year-old walked three and struck out four in his second Triple-A start.
Norfolk and Columbus will square off again on Sunday night from Harbor Park, with right-hander Jim Johnson (4-9, 3.93) slated to take the hill for the Tides against Clippers' righty Joel Hanrahan (5-3, 3.50). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15.
