Oklahoma RedHawks (65-56) at Albuquerque Isotopes (52-68)
Game 122 | August 10, 2008 | Isotopes Park | Albuquerque, NM
Radio: Fox Sports Radio AM 1340, RedHawks Radio Network | Play-by- Play: Jim Byers
TODAY'S MATCHUP
RH Doug Mathis (5-0, 3.55) vs. LH Chris Seddon (8-8, 4.87)
Mathis: Making first Triple-A rehab start while on Texas' disabled list (2-1, 6.85 ERA w/ TEX)
Seddon: Surrendered 7 R on 5 H over 3.2 IP with 4 K & 5 BB in 8/04 loss @ TAC (12-6 TAC)
LAST GAME: Oklahoma allowed six runs over the first two innings and could not overcome the deficit in a 8-2 loss to Albuquerque. The Isotopes hit five home runs in the win, their fifth over the RedHawks this season. Ryan Roberts had a pair of hits to pace Oklahoma, while Nate Gold drove in a run. Brian Gordon took the loss to fall to 3-4 with the RedHawks.
LONG BALL DOES IN GORDON: Brian Gordon did not walk a batter in last night's loss, snapping a string of ten consecutive appearances where he walked at least one. Gordon did, however, allow four home runs, more than any other Oklahoma pitcher has surrendered in any game this season. Yukinaga Maeda also allowed a home run, and the five total long balls matched the most the RedHawks have given up in any game this season. The Bees hit five in Oklahoma's 9-8 loss at Salt Lake on July 24.
FIRST PINCH HIT:
Casey Benjamin singled in the ninth inning last night while batting for Kevin Richardson was Oklahoma's first hit of the year in a Pinch hitting situation. RedHawk pinch hitters had been 0-10 with seven strikeouts prior to that at bat.
LEAD DOWN TO SIX:
Oklahoma's loss and New Orleans win decreased the RedHawks division lead down to six games. The RedHawks are 2-8 over their last ten games, while the Zephyrs have won seven of their last ten. Oklahoma dropped to nine games over .500 for the first time since July 10. The RedHawks magic number remained at 18.
HIGH RISING ERA:
The RedHawks have a 9-13 mark since the All-Star Break and have seen their team earned run average rise considerably since. Oklahoma entered play on July 18 with a staff ERA of 4.11, including a 4.08 mark by starting pitchers and 4.16 by relievers. Entering play tonight, the team earned run average has risen to 4.46, including a 4.55 ERA for the starting pitchers and a 4.31 average by the relievers. Despite the rise in the actual number, Oklahoma's team ERA is still the fourth best in the entire Pacific Coast League.
MATHIS IS BACK:
Doug Mathis will join Oklahoma tonight for a Major League rehab assignment. The right-hander began the season as Oklahoma's third starter and went 5-0 over seven starts with the RedHawks prior to having his contract purchased by Texas on May 11. Mathis made eight appearances with the Rangers, going 2-1 with a 6.85 ERA be fore being placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 20 with right shoulder inflammation.
ALBUQUERQUE AT A GLANCE:
Chris Seddon will make his second start against the RedHawks this season. Seddon pitched six innings on April 25 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark and allowed only one unearned run despite walking six batters. Seddon did not factor in the decision of the Isotopes 3-2 win.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas was blanked by Baltimore 9-0. The Rangers have been outscored 18-1 over the first two games of the series at Camden Yards... Frisco was shutout by Northwest Arkansas 4-0... Bakersfield beat Modesto 7-2... Quad Cities beat Clinton 8-1... Spokane gave up four in the top of the ninth in a 7-6 loss to Vancouver.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Oklahoma pitchers have not retired the side in order in the first inning of a game in their last 21 chances, a streak dating back to July 18... Chris Shelton's six game hitting streak and 11 game on-base streak were snapped with an 0-4 performance last night... Nate Gold extended his on-base streak to 12 games with a doubled on Saturday.
