Sidewinders Slip Past Tacoma 4-3

Tucson, AZ - After a back-and-forth contest the Sidewinders were able to slip past the Rainiers 4-3 on Sunday night. A sacrifice fly by Phil Avlas brought in Wilkin Castillo for the winning run in the eighth inning.

Tacoma's Shawn Garrett plated the first run of the game when he hit a line drive single to right field scoring Victor Diaz from second. Victor Diaz extended the Rainiers lead in the fifth inning with an RBI double to center with two outs. Matt Tuiasosopo tried to score from first but was thrown out at the plate by Jesus Merchan on a relay throw.

Tucson cut the lead by one by scoring a run in the fifth inning when Jesus Merchan hit fly ball that landed in shallow center, allowing Tim Raines, Jr. to score. The Sidewinders took the lead in the sixth inning scoring two runs off a Trent Oeltjen double to left.

A Prentice Redman grounder to the shortstop allowed Luis Valbuena to score from third to tie up the game in the seventh inning.

Tucson's Reid Mahon earned his sixth save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth and a pair of punch outs.

The Sidewinders will face Tacoma in the last game of the series on Monday night at 7:00 PM. RHP Max Scherzer (0-0, 2.70) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Brandon Morrow (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Rainiers. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 7:50 p.m.
