Oklahoma City Comets News Release
LAST GAME: Oklahoma held a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Iowa would answer in a big way in their 12-5 win last night. The I-Cubs tallied five runs in the third with three home runs, and added six in the seventh and one in the eighth for the win. The RedHawks were led offensively by Drew Meyer and Ryan Roberts with two hits and two runs batted in apiece. Steve Rowe (3-4) took the loss in his ninth start of the season.
ERA ON THE RISE: The RedHawks team ERA jumped from 4.28 to 4.37 after all 12 runs scored last night were of the earned variety. Oklahoma entered play last night with the league's fourth best ERA and head into action tonight one spot lower.
SNAPPED: Nate Gold's longest hitting streak as a member of the Oklahoma roster was stopped at 12 games. The first baseman went 0-3 last night with a walk and a run scored. It matched the third longest streak this season by any RedHawk, duplicating Jason Ellison's hitting streak from April 9 through 21, which, coincidentally, was also snapped during a series against Iowa. Gold had 17 hits in 43 at bats during the streak (.395), and raised his average from .210 to .239 during the 12 game run.
TAKIN' ON THE 'TOPES:
This series is the third of four against the Isotopes this season, and the second at the Brick in 2008. Oklahoma is hitting .315 against Albuquerque pitchers this year with 55 runs on 88 hits including nine home runs. The Isotopes are batting .314 against RedHawks pitchers with 47 runs on 92 hits, including 12 home runs. The April series here at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark was split two win apiece, with Oklahoma taking the final two games of the set.
ALBUQUERQUE AT A GLANCE:
The Isotopes enter play in fourth place in the division, eight and a half games behind the RedHawks... Albuquerque beat New Orleans last night to snap an eight game losing streak, their longest such streak this season... The Isotopes feature four PCL All-Stars, keyed by third baseman Dallas McPherson, the league's home run leader. Outfielder John Gall and catcher John Baker were also elected to the squad, while pitcher Chris Seddon was selected for the roster... McPherson is the reigning PCL Offensive Player of the Week, having homered in seven straight games from June 18 through 27, matching the league record set in 1977 by the Albuquerque Dukes' Claude Westmoreland. McPherson enters play tonight with the league's longest current on-base streak at 30 games, dating back to June 3... Tonight's pitcher Bobby Keppel has lost six of his last seven starts and has factored in the decision in 15 of his 16 starts this year, losing six of the last seven.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas staved off Baltimore 11-10... Frisco edged Northwest Arkansas 8-7... Bakersfield beat Lake Elsinore 8-5... Clinton knocked off Burlington 6-2... Spokane beat Eugene 5-3.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Chris Shelton was designated for assignment by Texas on June 26 and sent outright to Oklahoma on Sunday. Shelton hit .216 with a pair of home runs and 11 runs batted in for Texas over 41 games after his contract was purchased on April 29. He had played in 14 games during the month of April for Oklahoma, with hits in 12 of the 14 and has an active seven-game hitting streak when he steps into the box for the RedHawks... Nelson Cruz is two home runs shy of tying for tenth place in Oklahoma City Triple-A history (Scott Sheldon- 28 in 1999)... Cruz had his 15 game home hitting streak snapped last night with an 0-5 performance... No current RedHawk has a hitting streak longer than two games, save Chris Shelton, who hasn't played for Oklahoma since April 27.
