The New Orleans Zephyrs are the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. This is the first year the Mets are the parent club. The Zephyrs were affiliated with Washington in 2005-2006. Last year, the Zephyrs finished third in the American South Division with a 72-71 record.
VS. NEW ORLEANS: The Zephyrs took two of the three games completed June 15-17 at Zephyr Field. The finale of that series was suspended and will be made up during this series. The RedHawks took three of four from the Zephyrs April 26-29 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The Hawks outscored the Z's 26-12. The RedHawks hit three of their nine April homers in the series. Last season at Zephyr Field, the Z's took seven of eight, sweeping a four-game set June 30-July 3.
TODAY'S GAME: This is game 125 of the season, and the first of a 4-game series between Oklahoma and New Orleans. This is the eighth of 16 meetings between the RedHawks and Redbirds this season.
LAST GAME: The RedHawks won their third straight game against Memphis, downing the Redbirds 4-3 last night. The RedHawks scored first for the third consecutive game, taking a 1-0 lead when Kevin Mahar scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. The Redbirds tied the score at one with a run in the third inning. Nate Gold hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third to put the RedHawks ahead 2-1. The Hawks added two insurance runs in the eighth, and the Redbirds scored two in the top of the ninth to make the final score 4-3. Starter Armando Galarraga, making just his second start of the season for the RedHawks, picked up the win as he allowed just one run on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Francisco Cruceta pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Alfredo Simon makes his team-high 22nd start of the season. He lost his start Sunday against Iowa, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings. Simon lost his only start this season against the Z's April 29 at The Brick, allowing seven runs on six hits in four innings. Mike Pelfry goes to the mound for the Zephyrs.
REDHAWKS ON THE ROAD: The RedHawks are 16-6 in their last 22 road games. The Hawks are hitting .282 with 28 homers in the last 22 road games. They have outscored their opponents 133-78 during that time. The pitching staff has a 2.99 ERA in that stretch.
GOLD RUSH: Gold has put up some big power numbers this month, hitting seven homers and knocking in 16 runs 16 August games. He leads the RedHawks with 20 homers and 85 RBIs. The RedHawks are 9-2 in the last 11 games Gold has homered after winning last night
LUCKY SEVENS: A RedHawk starter has pitched into the seventh inning in four straight starts after Galarraga pitched 6.2 innings last night. Edinson Volquez, Chris Baker, and Eric Hurley each pitched through the seventh as the four starters combined to allow the Redbirds just three runs in 27.2 IP.
FELDMAN GETS IT DONE IN RELIEF: Scott Feldman hasn't allowed an earned run in his last seven appearances out of the bullpen, dating back to Aug. 3. He has allowed just four hits while striking out seven in 7.2 innings. Feldman threw a scoreless inning, striking out two Redbirds in his last appearance Thursday night.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Freddy Guzman leads the league with 45 stolen bases. Tug Hulett is fourth with 84 runs scored.
DOT-DOT-DOT: The RedHawks are 10-9 on Saturday this season, and they're 21-11 in the first game of a series...the RedHawks are 5-0-1 in their last six road series...the Hawks have at least one extra-base hit in 19 straight games... Victor Diaz has 26 RBIs in his last 30 games...Tug Hulett is hitting .335 since June 27th, raising his batting average 41 points to .279. He has reached base safely in 22 straight road games...Kevin West has reached base safely in 21 straight road games...Desi Relaford is hitting .389 (14-36) with a homer and four RBIs since rejoining the team Aug. 5...
