Metairie, LA - The New Orleans Zephyrs announced at their game on Saturday that they will donate a total of $6,457 to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund in honor of their former third baseman.
The team has been collecting donations since Coolbaugh's death when he was killed after being struck by a line drive while coaching first base for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers on Sunday, July 22nd. Coolbaugh was a member of the 2004 Zephyrs team and tied the team's record for home runs in a season with 30, along with his teammate Phil Hiatt who also hit 30 home runs in 2004.
The Zephyrs honored Coolbaugh and announced the total amount of the donation on Saturday. Former Zephyrs pitcher and Coolbaugh teammate Kirk Bullinger was on hand to encourage the crowd to donate to the Fund and spoke about his experience as a teammate of Coolbaugh's.
In the middle of the 7th inning Zephyrs infielder Jason Alfaro, also a teammate of Coolbaugh's, came out to the field and announced to the crowd the amount that would be donated and thanked Zephyrs fans for their support.
Fans that wish to make individual donations in addition to the Zephyrs donation may do so by sending a check to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund c/o Spirit Bank at 1800 S. Baltimore Ave. Tulsa, OK 74119.
