LAST GAME:
Nate Gold and Kevin Richardson both hit three-run home runs in the first inning to stake the RedHawks to an early lead, and Oklahoma hung on for a 9-8 win. The RedHawks added two runs in the second and held a 9-7 lead after four innings. Five pitchers combined to hold off the Beavers, with Wes Littleton earning his first win of the season, and Kaz Fukumori notching his first save in the United States. Oklahoma and Portland have played three straight one-run games this season, and the RedHawks staved off their first series loss of the season.
GOODBYE APRIL:
The RedHawks closed out the first month of the season the way the opened it, with a one-run victory. Oklahoma hit .286 for the month with 29 home runs and held a team ERA of 4.29. Within the Rangers organization, the .286 average was the second highest behind Double-A Frisco (.292), while the team ERA was third out of five, behind Clinton (2.79) and Bakersfield (3.89). The RedHawks 18 wins matched the RoughRiders and the LumberKings for the most in the organization. Texas was the only team in the organizational hierarchy with a losing record.
ONE YEAR AGO:
The RedHawks were 12-12 after one month last season with a team average of .260 and an ERA of 3.87. The '07 Oklahoma squad had just nine home runs after the first month (Nelson Cruz has nine alone this season), and no pitcher had more than two wins (Doug Mathis and Elizardo Ramirez each have four this year). Victor Diaz did have 28 RBIs, one more than Cruz has at the present time for the RedHawks.
WITH AUTHORITY:
Kevin Richardson extended his hitting streak to eight games with his first inning home run. The eight-game run is the third longest streak by any RedHawk hitter this season, trailing only Jason Ellison (12) and Brandon Boggs (9).
MEYER TO DL/ FOX CALLED UP:
Drew Meyer was placed on the RedHawks disabled list earlier today with a strained groin, and Adam Fox was promoted from Frisco to take his place on the roster. Meyer suffered the injury during Tuesday's game with Portland, and was called into action yesterday was Casey Benjamin left the game. Fox hit .299 with the RoughRiders in 20 games this season, 12 of which were played at second base.
PORTLAND AT A GLANCE:
The Beavers had their second three-game losing streak this season snapped in yesterday's loss... Portland hit .270 in April and won 10 games. The 2007 Beavers hit .242 in the season's first month, winning 10 of 24 games as well.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION:
Texas hung on to beat Kansas City 11-9. Four players who have donned Oklahoma jerseys this season factored in the win (Shelton, Boggs, Duran, and Francisco)... Frisco defeated San Antonio 6-4 in ten innings... Bakersfield slipped past Modesto 2-1... Clinton beat Great Lakes 6-4.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Nelson Cruz went 1-4 yesterday afternoon but went without a home run, breaking his streak at two straight games. Cruz did, however, extend his hitting streak to seven games... Kevin Mench extended his hitting streak in yesterday's win as well. Mench has hits in six consecutive games and has raised his average from .210 to .262 over the last week.
