Oilers' Win Streak Halted by Rush in 5-2 Setback

Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - Back on home ice for the first time in two weeks, the Tulsa Oilers turned in a lackluster performance on Friday night that resulted in a 5-2 loss to the Rapid City Rush in front of 5,414 at the BOK Center. Tulsa's five-game win streak was snapped while Rapid City tasted victory for the first time in its last seven road games.

After an evenly played first period in which the Rush outshot the Oilers 9-8, the visitors took control of the contest in the middle frame. Jesse Schultz slid a backhand underneath Tulsa goalie Shane Madolora at the 1:30 mark of the second period to give the Rush a 1-0 advantage. Four and a half minutes later, Eric Giosa tipped Brett Kostolansky's shot through Madolora's legs to give Rapid City a two-goal edge. With Oilers forward Ryan Menei serving a slashing minor late in the period, Sean Erickson capitalized on the power play and the Rush lead swelled to 3-0. Erickson, who returned to Tulsa for the first time after spending four seasons in an Oilers uniform, finished the night with a goal and an assist, one of three Rush players to record multiple points.

What little hope the Oilers add was quickly dashed early in the third period when Scott Brannon's shorthanded breakaway goal gave Rapid City a 4-0 lead. Power play goals from Menei and Drew Fisher helped the Oilers cut the deficit in half but the home team would come no closer. Konrad Reeder tapped home a gorgeous feed from Giosa at 13:09 to close the door on the Oilers comeback hopes.

The Oilers have not allowed five goals since a 5-3 loss at Missouri on January 25 and suffered their largest margin of defeat since dropping a 7-4 decision at Allen on December 28. Menei extended his goal streak to three games, but Madolora saw his eight-game win streak come to an end. Schultz and Giosa each registered a goal and two assists to lead Rapid City's offensive effort while goaltender Tim Boron earned his 26th win of the season. The Oilers were outshot 26-24 for the game and fell to the Rush for the first time this season. The road team has won every game in the series which concludes tomorrow night at 7:35 p.m. at the BOK Center.
