Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Thomas Frazee scored two goals- one of them shorthanded- and picked up an assist and Jeff Lee scored once and added a pair of assists as the host Quad City Mallards defeated the Arizona Sundogs 5-3 Friday night . With the win the Mallards (27-18-8, 62 points) snapped a three game losing streak and opened up a four point lead over the eighth place Sundogs (26-24-6, 58 points) in the Central Hockey League standings.
The Mallards seized the initiative when Frazee struck twice in the first period. He tipped in Lee's shot to open the scoring 4:02 into the game. The Mallards doubled the advantage while down a man when Frazee finished off a 2-on-1 rush by rifling in Lee's goalmouth feed at 17:50 of the first.
Arizona's Alex Velischek cut the gap to 2-1 from the high slot at 4:54 of the second period. Gergo Nagy pounced on a rebound to reestablish the two-goal Mallard lead at 11:11 of the second, but just over five minutes later the Sundogs once more pulled within one when Shawn Limpright buried a rebound.
The Mallards grabbed crucial insurance with a pair of third period goals. The Mallards lead stood at 5-2 after Justin Fox jumped on a rebound at 2:24 of the third and Lee tipped in a power play goal at 14:35. Bryan Cameron's point blank goal cut the margin to 5-3 with 62 seconds left in the game but the Mallards made sure their goal cushion stood up even after the Sundogs pulled goaltender Andrew Engelage for an extra attacker in the final minute.
The Mallards and Sundogs meet again at the iWireless Center tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow evening the Mallards will wear their special edition orange third jerseys for the final time when they again take on the Sundogs. After the game those jerseys will go up for bid in a live auction- presented by both Genesis and KWQC TV6- to benefit the Genesis Outpatient Pediatric Therapy Center.
