Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - The Tulsa Oilers fell behind less than a minute into Friday's tilt against the Wichita Thunder and provided little resistance to their biggest rival in an 8-2 loss in front of 5,303 at the BOK Center.
A Dustin Donaghy wrist shot squeezed through Oilers goalie Shane Madolora with just 42 seconds off the first period clock and Wichita was off and running. Nick McParland and Matt Robinson helped the Thunder build a 3-0 first period advantage before the Oilers were finally able to get on the board. Drew Fisher jammed in a rebound in front of Thunder netminder Taylor Nelson for his second goal in as many nights and his fifth tally of the season.
Trailing 3-1 early in the second period, the Oilers struggles continued when Wichita forward Matt Summers took advantage of a fallen Tulsa defenseman and beat Madolora on a breakaway. The Oilers looked to get back in the game on the power play but a penalty shot was awarded to Thunder forward Ian Lowe after it was ruled that his rush to the net was impeded by Oilers winger Michel Beausoleil. Lowe took full advantage of the opportunity and snapped the puck past the blocker of Madolora to give the visitors a 5-1 edge with 15:53 remaining in the middle frame. Madolora surrendered five goals on 13 shots and was lifted from the game after 24 minutes of action.
Thunder defenseman Jesse Dudas pounded a power play slap shot past Oilers rookie goaltender Alex Dupuis to make it 6-1 at the 6:42 mark of the third and the rout was officially on. Nathan Lutz would bring the Oilers back within four with his third goal of the season but Thunder barrage showed no signs of slowing down. Dudas lifted a backhand over Dupuis for his second goal of the period and Robinson netted his second goal of the evening to cap off the Thunder victory.
Wichita tied its season high for goals in a single game while the Oilers gave up eight goals in a game for the third time this season. Tulsa finished its four-game holiday home stand with a 2-2-0 record and has dropped four of its last six games.
The Oilers are 4-2-0 against the Thunder this season but both losses have occurred at the BOK Center and Tulsa has been outscored 14-3 in those contests.
Saturday evening in Allen, the Oilers begin a string of five consecutive road games. The Oilers and Americans face off for the second time in three days at 7:05 p.m. at the Allen Event Center.
