Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - Positive momentum has been hard to come by so far this season for the Tulsa Oilers. Following a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Wichita Thunder on Friday, the Oilers once again failed to post back-to-back wins, falling 3-2 to the Thunder Saturday night at the BOK Center.
Tulsa has not won back-to-back games since November. The loss drops the Oilers to 11-25-3 on the year.
The first period was largely controlled by the Thunder, who took the 1-0 lead on a Kevin Young odd-angled wrister from R.G. Flath with 13:25 remaining in the opening period. It was Young's 14 th goal on the season and the 20 th assist from Flath.
The second period saw more of the same, with Wichita controlling the ice, taking 22 shots in the period to only nine for the Oilers. The bright spot for the Oilers came one minute into the period as they knotted the score with a Ryan Menei point blank goal in which Ben Gordon and Ryan Barlock assisted.
The Thunder answered with a Flath power-play strike from Matt Summers and Greger Hanson with 15:50 left to play in the second period.
In the final stanza the Oilers came out with a purpose, tying the game as Menei tapped in the puck as it rebounded off the post for his second goal of the game, which gave him 15 on the year.
As they did on the Oilers previous goal, the Thunder quickly stinted Tulsa's momentum. Less than two minutes later Matt Summers scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. On another power-play, Summers saw the puck fall right into his lap as he slid it in with 14:39 to go.
Thunder goalie Torrie Jung was victorious for the second time of the season against the Oilers. His previous win came on an 8-2 pounding of the Oilers on Oct. 20. Tulsa was unable to get much going as Jung ended with 33 saves.
Shane Madolora had another strong game for the Oilers with 43 saves.
Wichita came into the contest No. 1 in the Central Hockey League on penalty kills, and shut down all four of the Oilers power-play opportunities.
It was Oilers captain Tyler Fleck's 746 th career CHL game, moving him into second place on the all-time list of games played.
Tulsa is now 2-4 against the Wichita on the season and will take them on in a rubber game Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at the BOK Center.
