Tulsa Oilers News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - One night after falling to the Komets, the Oilers took an early first period lead and held on for the duration of the contest to pick up a hard-fought 2-1 victory in front of 8,117 at the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum.
Mike Ullrich snapped a nine-game stretch without a goal when he deked around a Komets defenseman and beat goaltender Gerry Festa at the 11:10 mark of the first period. With his 17th marker of the season, Ullrich re-gained the CHL's rookie goal lead.
Late in the first period, the Oilers were down a man when Marty Standish scooped up a loose puck in the Fort Wayne zone and zipped a shot past Festa to push the Tulsa lead to 2-0. It was Standish's fourth goal of the year, the Oilers third shorthanded tally of the season.
It remained a 2-0 contest until the mid-way point of the third period. Frankie DeAngelis pulled the Komets within one by burying Stephon Thorne's pass from behind the net. Oilers goaltender Ian Keserich faced a barrage of shots over the final 10:45 but stopped them all to register his first victory since December 27.
The Oilers, who had lost six of seven coming into the game, have now won two of their last three road games. The narrow decision marks the first time all season Tulsa has won a game when scoring two goals or less.
Tulsa travels to Evansville on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. for the first meeting of the season with the Icemen.
