MOLINE, Ill. (January 22, 2012) - Nick Boucher made 32 saves and four different Fort Wayne Komets scored as the Komets defeated the host Quad City Mallards 4-1 Sunday.
The Komets jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the way to handing the Mallards Quad City's fourth straight defeat.
"We're going to work extremely hard this week. That's the only way you get out of [a losing streak]," said Mallards coach and general manager David Bell. "We're going to stay positive...I like this group so we're going to work through it and we're going to come out a better team."
The Komets produced the first goal of the afternoon when Stephon Thorne scored from the side of the net at 2:33 of the first period.
The Komets stretched the lead to three with a pair of second period goals. Jean-Michel Rizk swept the second Fort Wayne goal into an open net at 9:14 of the second; just more than two minutes later Brent Henley buried Bobby Chaumont's cross-crease pass.
The Mallards cut the gap to 3-1 and ended a goal-scoring drought that had lasted 169:28 when Brandon Marino drove home a loose puck from the bottom of the left wing circle during a Quad City power play at 6:15 of the third period.
The Mallards pulled goaltender David McKee late in the third to try and claw closer, but instead it was the Komets' Chris Auger who scored an empty net goal to clinch the Fort Wayne win with 1:35 remaining.
The Mallards return to action Friday night in Missouri against the Mavericks. The Mallards next play on home ice Friday night, February 3 at 7:05 p.m. against the Komets
