Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Lethbridge, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (45-12-2-1) got a four-point night from Carter Souch and 31 saves from Sebastian Cossa as they defeated the Lethbidge Hurricanes (26-29-3-1) 5-2 on Friday night at the Enmax Centre.

The Oil Kings were able to weather an early storm from the Hurricanes in the opening minutes as SCossa came up with a handful of saves to keep the game scoreless in the early going.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring at the 7:27 mark as Brendan Kuny, who returned to the lineup after missing the last eight games with injury, took a pass from Braeden Wynne down below the goal line and banked a shot off the back of Lethbridge netminder Bryan Thomson and just before the puck crossed the goal line Jakub Demek was able to get the last touch for his 18th of the season.

Josh Williams added to the Edmonton lead late in the first as just nine seconds into an Oil Kings power play he took a pass from Demek in the right-circle and quickly got off a snap shot that found the back of the net over the blocker of Thomson for his 34th goal of the campaign giving his team the two-goal lead at the first intermission.

The Oil King tacked on two more goals and got 16 saves from Cossa in the second period to take a 4-0 lead into the third period.

Justin Sourdif nabbed his 21st goal of the season at the 5:55 mark as he took a pass from Dylan Guenther at the side of the Lethbridge net and from in tight was able to hoist the puck just under the bar to make it 3-0 Edmonton.

Guenther added his 41st goal of the season, tying Curtis Lazar for second-most by an Oil King in a single season, as he chiseled a puck back to Ethan Peters at the blueline where Peters would make a nice play to peel the puck off the boards to get off a quick shot that Guenther was able to redirect past Thomson with just under seven-and-a-half minutes left in the frame.

In the third period, the Hurricanes would get a pair of goals from Brayden Edwards to pull to within two but with under 20 seconds left in the game, Souch would fire home an empty-netter to cap a four-point night for himself and a 5-2 win for the Oil Kings.

Cossa finished the night making 32 saves for his league-leading 31st win of the season, while Thomson took the loss making 23 saves. The Oil Kings went one-for-three on the power play, the Hurricanes were zero-for-five.

Next up, the Oil Kings and Hurricanes hook up again Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place with puck drop scheduled for 4:00 PM.
