Brandon, Man. - The Prince Albert Raiders (24-30-4-1) dropped a 5-3 game to the Brandon Wheat Kings (29-24-3-2) on Friday night at Westoba Place to open their three-game weekend in Manitoba.
Landon Kosior and Sloan Stanick each had a goal and an assist in the loss. Evan Herman chipped in a pair of assists. Reece Vitelli was the other goal scorer for the Raiders.
The Wheat Kings opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the contest. Nolan Ritchie sent the puck cross-crease to Jake Chiasson who lifted it over a sliding Tikhon Chaika to make it 1-0.
The Raiders responded at the 6:28 mark of the opening frame. Vladislav Shilo got the puck along the end boards and sent a backhanded pass to Vitelli in the slot. The Raiders captain one-timed it over Ethan Kruger for his team-leading 24th goal of the year.
Brandon regained the lead midway through the period. Nate Danielson made a cross-zone pass to Tyson Zimmer who one-timed it past Chaika to give the Wheat Kings a 2-1 lead at the 9:24 mark.
About three minutes later, the Wheat Kings made it a two-goal game with a power-play marker. Danielson set up Ritchie alone in the slot and Ritchie wired the shot past Chaika to make it a 3-1 game.
Kosior cut into the lead with a power-play goal of their own with 5:23 to play in the first. Herman charged down the left wing and was able to turn the corner on the Wheat Kings defender. He sent a pass a cross the crease to Kosior who tapped in the pass for his 17th goal of the year, making it a 3-2 game for the Wheat Kings at the first intermission.
Brandon restored its two-goal lead 6:57 into the second period. Riley Ginnell picked off a pass near the blueline on a Raiders power play. He skated it away before springing Ritchie on a breakaway. Ritchie got Chaika to open his pads and he slipped a backhand through the Raiders goaltender to give the Wheat Kings a 4-2 advantage.
The Wheat Kings added another power-play goal with 6:25 to play in the middle frame. Chiasson, who was stationed behind the net, set up Ginnell at the top of the crease who one-timed it quickly past Chaika to make it a 5-2 game after two periods.
The Raiders outshot the Wheat Kings 15-4 in the final period but were only able to get one past Kruger in the final minute of the third period. Herman made a cross-zone pass to Kosior on the left wing. Kosior quickly fed Stanick who deposited the backdoor feed for his 19th goal of the season, rounding out the scoring at 5-3 for the Wheat Kings.
Chaika finished the game with 14 saves in the loss; Kruger stopped 34 shots for Brandon.
