Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Seattle, WA - The Edmonton Oil Kings got a 21-save shutout from Sebastian Cossa and a two-point night from former Thunderbird Simon Kubicek as they blanked Seattle 4-0 in Game 3 of the WHL Championship Series to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven, at the accesso ShoWare Center on Tuesday night.
For a third straight game, the Oil Kings and Thunderbirds were both unable to manufacture a first period goal as they entered intermission in a scoreless tie.
The Oil Kings put nine shots on Seattle netminder Thomas Milic and did beat him once after Logan Dowhaniuk had a point shot get by the keeper, but had it clank off the post behind him. Cossa was rock-solid for the Oil Kings stopping all eight pucks ushered his way, including an incredible backdoor stoning of Conner Roulette on a T-Birds power play.
The second period was another tight-checking frame between these two clubs, but Edmonton would find their skating legs and with just under three minutes left, they opened the scoring.
Just as a Seattle power play expired, Jakub Demek grabbed a puck in his own zone, skated coast-to-coast, dropped his shoulder to power past a Thunderbirds defenceman and stuffed the puck past a sprawled Milic for the games opening tally.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would pull away for good starting just over four minutes in when Kubicek cashed in on a power play after a between the legs setup from Jalen Luypen.
Less than eight minutes later, Kaiden Guhle extended the Edmonton lead after Jake Neighbours and Justin Sourdif worked the puck all over the offensive zone, they found Guhle in the high-slot and he ripped a shot over the right shoulder of Milic.
In the final minute, Carter Souch put the game to bed as he found the empty-net with a shot from the neutral zone to extend his personal goal scoring streak to five games.
Cossa finished the night making 21 saves for his league-leading fourth shutout of the playoffs, while Milic made 33 saves for Seattle. The Oil Kings went 1-for-4 on the power play, the Thunderbirds were 0-for-3.
Next up, the Oil Kings and Thunderbirds hit the ice again tomorrow night for Game 4 at the accesso ShoWare Center with puck drop set for 8:00 PM MT, you can listen to the game at oilkings.ca/radio
