Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Chicago Blackhawks selected Edmonton Oil Kings forward Jalen Luypen with their seventh-round selection, 216th-overall, on the second day of the 2021 NHL Draft.

"It means the world to me," said Luypen on getting the call that he had been drafted. "It's been a dream of mine since I was kid. To get that phone call and experience it with my family was a huge honour and a memory I'll have for a lifetime.

"I was talking with my mom and wasn't sure if it was going to happen or not, and then my phone rang, and it was an Illinois number, my jaw dropped, my mom started screaming and then 10-seconds later there were a lot of happy tears shed in our house."

Luypen, 19, is coming off his third season with the Oil Kings and set new career highs in goals (16), assists (13) and points (29) in just 23 games during the pandemic-shortened 2021 WHL season to go along with 25 penalty minutes and a +15 plus/minus rating.

The Kelowna, BC native was named the Oil Kings 2021 Most Improved Player after finishing second on the team in goals and third in points. He finished the season as the WHL's fifth highest goal scorer.

"They're a great organization, an original-six team, that has had a lot of success throughout the years," added Luypen on the organization he is joining. "I can't wait to go in there and learn from so many great players like Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane who have been there for a while and have had super successful careers."

In his career, the 5-foot-10, 155-pound forward has appeared in 134 games with the Oil Kings and has recorded 60 points (32G, 28A), 94 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating. He was originally drafted by the Oil Kings in the ninth round, 180th-overall, of the 2017 WHL Draft.

Luypen becomes the 23rd player in modern franchise history to be selected from the Oil Kings at the NHL Draft and fourth this year. This is the third time (2011, 2014 and 2021) the Oil Kings have had at least four players selected in the same draft year.
