Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings scored five times in the final 40 minutes on Saturday night as they took a 2-0 lead in their second round series against the Red Deer Rebels with a 5-0 victory at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings looked like they were going to pick up right where they left off on Thursday night as they spent the first two-and-half minutes globe-trotting around the Red Deer zone but were unable to solve Chase Coward for an opening goal.
Later in the period, Dylan Guenther had the best opportunity for Edmonton to break the deadlock after he danced a pair of Red Deer defenceman to get in on a partial breakaway only to have his shot stopped.
The Rebels best opportunity in the opening frame came off the stick of Jhett Larson in the late stages as the Red Deer rookie caused a turnover at his own blueline, raced the length of the ice on a clear-cut breakaway, but had his offering denied by the left-pad of Sebastian Cossa.
The Oil Kings outshot the Rebels 15-8 in the first 20 minutes but had to settle for a scoreless draw at the intermission.
In the second period, the Oil Kings would take two early penalties but were able to keep the Rebel's power play at bay thanks to some timely clears and goaltending.
The Oil Kings were able to get back in rhythm just past the halfway mark of the middle stanza and it would be Jaxsen Wiebe opening the scoring at the 11:45 mark after taking a pass from Carter Souch, walking into the right-circle and snapping a shot over the left pad of Coward.
Guenther added to the Oil Kings lead with just under three minutes left in the period after Luke Prokop intercepted an outlet pass along the right-wall of the Red Deer zone, handed off to Guenther who played a give-and-go to perfection with Justin Sourdif for his sixth goal in as many games.
Cossa ended up making 13 saves in the Edmonton crease in the period to keep his team in front 2-0 after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Oil Kings put their foot to the floor scoring three times to pull away with the 5-0 game two win.
Sourdif made it 3-0 Oil Kings 2:56 into the period on a shorthanded penalty shot. He slowly wound his way into the zone, cut to the middle and then made a move to his backhand lifting the puck over the right-pad of Coward.
Jakub Demek scored on a power play less than five minutes later after he banged home a rebound off a Kaiden Guhle shot from the blue line.
Wiebe, who opened the scoring, closed the night out with his second of the night and the Oil Kings second shorthanded goal of the period after he stripped a Red Deer player of the puck in front of his own net and made a slick move to his backhand, and out waited Coward to slip the puck past his outstretched leg.
Cossa finished the night making 26 saves for his second straight shutout and third of the playoffs while Coward and Connor Ungar combined for 37 saves in the defeat. The Oil Kings went 1-for-5 on the power play, the Rebels were 0-for-7.
Next up, the series shifts to Red Deer as the Oil Kings and Rebels square off at the Peavey Mart Centrium for Game 3 on Monday night at 7:00 PM.
