Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Clay Hanus struck on the power play at 16:21 of the third period to give the Winterhawks the go-ahead goal en route to a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Saturday night.

Hanus collected a pass from Gabe Klassen on the right-side half-wall, then fired a wrist shot through a maze of bodies past Seattle's Thomas Milic to seal Portland's win.

With the win, Portland moved to 5-0-0 in the playoffs and took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven.

The Thunderbirds got off to the better start in this one as Jared Davidson's fourth of the postseason gave the hosts an early lead, but a pair of Portland goals in the second period gave the Winterhawks some life. Marcus Nguyen knotted things up at 8:44 on a rebound, followed six minutes later by James Stefan's breakaway marker for Portland's first lead of the night. Seattle responded late in the second, however, as Matthew Rempe potted his fourth of the playoffs.

Following Hanus' game-winner, Robbie Fromm-Delorme posted his first of the playoffs with an empty-netter to ice the victory. Taylor Gauthier finished with 23 saves on 25 shots for his fifth consecutive postseason victory.

The series now shifts to Portland as the Winterhawks and Thunderbirds tangle at the VMC at 5:00 on Sunday.
