Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - It was deja vu all over again for the Edmonton Oil Kings on Tuesday night at Rexall Place, as they overcame a sizeable deficit after 40 minutes to score four goals in the third period and post a dramatic victory over the Prince George Cougars for the second time this season.
The Oil Kings and Cougars' first matchup of the 2010-11 campaign was on Oct. 10 at Rexall, and the home side trailed 6-3 after two periods only to come back and score four straight goals, eventually winning 8-7 in overtime as Dylan Wruck tallied the game-winner with less than one second left in the sudden-death period.
Tuesday's thrilling affair was almost an exact replica, as the Oil Kings trailed 5-2 going into the final frame only to score four times and emerge with a 6-5 victory. Edmonton outshot Prince George 26-5 in the third period, and none other than Wruck notched the game-winner with 1:33 left on the clock.
The Oil Kings' leading scorer tallied his 32nd goal and 58th point of the year for the game-winner, as he cut across the slot and snapped a wrist shot top shelf glove side on Cougars goalie Ty Rimmer. Rhett Rachinski, Adrian Van de Mosselaer, Travis Ewanyk, Jordan Hickmott and Mike Piluso also scored for the home side in the come-from-behind triumph.
Canadian World Junior team member Brett Connolly, Edmonton Oilers draft pick Martin Marincin and Nashville Predators prospect Taylor Stefishen each had two points to spot the Cougars their 5-2 lead. Oil Kings goalie Jon Groenheyde surrendered four goals in the opening period and was replaced for the final 40 minutes by Laurent Brossoit, who stopped 17 of 18 shots to earn the victory.
The Oil Kings are now 25-26-1-3 on the year to give them 54 points and sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Next up on their schedule are three important conference games in three nights in Saskatchewan and Manitoba this weekend, as they play Friday against the Moose Jaw Warriors, Saturday against the Brandon Wheat Kings and Sunday versus the Swift Current Broncos. The Warriors are in fifth with 65 points, while the Wheat Kings are in eighth with 48 points and the Broncos sit in seventh with 49 points.
The Oil Kings return home on Friday, Feb. 18 to play the Kamloops Blazers at 7 p.m. at Rexall Place for Singles Night, as a section of the crowd will be reserved for eligible bachelors and bachelorettes to meet and mingle.
Tickets to every Oil Kings home game are available starting at just $15 at any Ticketmaster outlet, online at oilkings.ca, or by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625).
