Vancouver Giants News Release

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings broke open a 2-1 hockey game with three unanswered goals in the 3rd period to defeat Vancouver 5-1 on Sunday afternoon, in front of 5,582 fans at Rexall Place.

The Giants went back to Liam Liston between the pipes for this one, and he was strong through 40 minutes. However Edmonton backup Tristan Jarry was the story of the game.

TJ Foster opened the scoring 5 minutes in and Travis Ewanyk potted the eventual game winner in the final minute of the first period to put the Oil Kings up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Liam Liston made some big saves in the 2nd period to give the Giants a chance to come back, and Vancouver made a game of it on the power play. At 13:46, Carter Popoff set up Marek Tvrdon for his 4th goal in 2 games and the Giants were back within one. The goal extended Tvrdon's points streak to 8 games (Jackson Houck's 7 game points streak came to an end), while Popoff picked up his first point in the WHL. It stayed 2-1 headed for the 3rd.

The Giants started the final period on a one minute power play that carried over from the second. But after they failed to convert, the Oil Kings got an insurance marker from Edgars Kulda on a breakaway, and then added two more late ones from Mitchell Moroz and Michael St. Croix to make it a 5-1 final.

Despite the score, Vancouver won the special teams battle, going 1 for 5 vs the best penalty kill in the league, and a perfect 5 for 5 on the penalty kill vs Edmonton's 2nd best power play.

The Oil Kings wound up with a slight 31-30 edge on the shot clock, which was only the second time this season the Giants were outshot. Tristan Jarry made 29 saves for Edmonton to pick up the win and Liam Liston stopped 26 shots for Vancouver in the loss.

The loss drops Vancouver to 3-10-0-0 on the season while Edmonton won their 4th straight to improve to an Eastern Conference-best 9-3-1-2.

The Giants continue the road trip Tuesday in Lethbridge vs the Hurricanes, which is game 2 of 5 on this trip. Face-off is 7pm in Lethbridge, 6pm Pacific Time, and the game can be heard in Vancouver on TEAM 1410 starting with the pre-game show at 5:30pm.
