Oil Kings Blank Rebels in Game 1
May 5, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
The Oil Kings came out with plenty of jump to kickoff their second round as they peppered 10 shots on the Red Deer net in the opening 10 minutes of game one, while on yielding one against to the visitors and finally at 10:13 of the opening frame, they opened the scoring.
With Edmonton on a power play, Kaiden Guhle gathered in the puck from Sebastian Cossa deep inside his own zone, raced the length of the ice, wound his way in behind the Red Deer net and found a charging Dylan Guenther in the right-wing circle with a pass that he pounded past the glove of Red Deer netminder Chase Coward for the second-round ice-breaker. Guenther's goal was his fifth in as many games.
The Oil Kings finished the period outshooting the Rebels 15-6 but had just the one goal lead to show for it.
In the second period, the Oil Kings took full control of the game scoring three times to increase their lead to 4-0 at the second intermission.
At 6:23 of the middle stanza, Simon Kubicek pinballed home a shot off a couple of Red Deer skaters for his first goal of the post-season.
Less than 10 minutes later, Kaiden Guhle made it 3-0 with his third goal of the playoffs after he took a drop pass from Jakub Demek in the left-circle of the Red Deer zone and ripped a shot over the left pad of Coward.
Less than two minutes later, Dawson Seitz scored his second goal in as many games as he cleaned up a rebound in the Rebels' crease after Luke Prokop had a point-shot tipped on goal by Jake Neighbours.
A physical and chippy third period saw the team's combine for just 11 shots on goal seven ejections as the Oil Kings cruised to the 4-0 game one victory.
Sebastian Cossa registered his second shutout of the playoffs making 18 saves, while Chase Coward and Connor Ungar combined for 31 saves in the Red Deer crease. The Oil Kings were 1-for-3 on the power play, the Rebels were 0-for-2.
Next up, the Oil Kings and Rebels are back at it on Saturday night at Rogers Place for Game 2, puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
