OHL Mourns the Loss of Ray Emery
July 16, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Soo Greyhounds News Release
The Ontario Hockey League family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of alumnus Ray Emery who passed away in Hamilton, Ont. on Sunday at the young age of 35.
Emery, who was a goaltender with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds from 1999-2002, passed away as the result of a tragic drowning in Lake Ontario early Sunday morning while swimming with a group of friends.
Having grown up in Cayuga, Ont., Emery was known as an intense competitor over the course of his 14-year professional career that included parts of 11 seasons in the NHL with stops in Ottawa, Philadelphia, Anaheim and Chicago. The 6-foot-2 netminder hoisted the Stanley Cup as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013, the same year he and goaltending partner Corey Crawford won the Jennings Trophy for posting the league's lowest goals-against average.
During his OHL tenure, Emery rose to stardom with the Greyhounds after being a fifth round pick by the club in the 1999 OHL Priority Selection. After being selected by the Ottawa Senators in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Draft, Emery was crowned both OHL and CHL Goaltender of the Year in 2002 and was also named a CHL First Team All-Star after posting 33 wins, a 2.73 goals-against average and .914 save percentage over 50 games played.
Some of Emery's other career highlights include playing in two AHL All-Star Games as well as a KHL All-Star Game during a one-year stint in Russia in 2008-09.
Thoughts and prayers are extended to the Emery family and all of Ray's friends and former teammates during this most difficult time.
