Ohio Valley Rallies to Steal Series Opener

Richmond, Indiana - Richmond was defeated by the Ohio Valley Recoats 15-12 on Tuesday night in the first of a three-game series. The Roosters took control early, but were overtaken late in the game as Ohio Valley put up big numbers in the final four innings. The teams combined for 27 runs on 30 hits and six errors.

The Redcoats scored first when Jaziel Mendoza hit a solo homer to left field, but the Roosters came back in their half of the second on a two-run double by Mike Bidwell to left that gave them the lead. Richmond added three more in the third. Kevin White scored a pair on a two-run shot over the wall in right and Nate Gravley scored the third when he came home on an error by the shortstop, giving Richmond a 5-1 lead after third. Dick Daly, Jr. made it 6-1 in the fourth when crushed a ball to right field that cleared both walls. O.J. Garza added a solo blast in the fifth

The Redcoats, however, started a comeback in the sixth. They scored four in the sixth, three in the seventh, three in the eighth and four in the ninth to total 15 runs overall in the game. Travis Garcia had four RBI on the night while Jaziel Mendoza and Kaliko Oligo had a pair of RBI each for the Ohio Valley. The Roosters got one in the seventh on a RBI single by Mike Bidwell two more in the seventh on a homer by Nate Gravley and two in the ninth on a Joe Rhomberg homer but it wouldn't be enough as the Roosters would fall 15-12 to Ohio Valley. Justin Gerlach (4-1) got the win for the Redcoats while Jason Elkins (8) earned the save. Adam Varteressian (7-2) took the loss for Richmond.

The Roosters (35-35) and Redcoats (32-37) will play the middle game of the series on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. (Indiana time). Matt Schweitzer (6-5, 3.35 ERA) will toe the mound for Richmond against Ryan Childs (4-5, 5.32 ERA) of Ohio Valley.
