Rockford RiverHawks News Release

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Kalamazoo Kings held off a ninth-inning charge from the Rockford RiverHawks to win, 5-4, and retake sole possession of first place in the Frontier League West Division.

The RiverHawks rallied for two runs in the ninth inning on back-to-back, two-out, pinch-hit RBI singles from Brian Baron and Kevin Ciarrachi and forced Kalamazoo to go to its closer. Josh Daws gave up a single to Jerome McCoy, but retired Jeremy Busch on a groundout to strand the tying and winning runs.

Daws earned his seventh save. Josh Beshears (10-2) struck out 11 in 8 2/3 innings for the win. Beshears retired 12 in a row, striking out seven of them, from the third through seventh innings.

Tanner Watson (1-3) scattered six hits and struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings, but walked five in the loss. Half the four runs he gave up, including the go-ahead run, were unearned. The Kings took a 3-2 lead in the third when Jason Sullivan reached on Rockford third baseman Ryan Larson's two-out, two-run error. They led the rest of the way.

The Kings lead the RiverHawks by a game. The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Thursday on RiverHawks Cap Night. The first 1,000 fans through the gate get a RiverHawks cap, sponsored by Money Mailer and by WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub. It's also a Thirsty Thursday, when Miller Lite sponsors Dollar Beer Night.

The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
