Ogden Raptors News Release
HELENA, MT - It was an up-and-down day for the Ogden Raptors.
First, their batted balls couldn't find holes in an 8-0 loss to the Helena Brewers.
A couple hours later, however, news broke that the Missoula Osprey had handed the Idaho Falls Chukars an 11-1 beating, ensuring the Raptors would stand alone atop the Pioneer League South division standings at the end of the first half.
On the field, it was a tough day all around for Ogden's ballclub. In the first game of a four-game series at Helena, the final regular season series ever between the two clubs, the Raptors were shut down on just two hits over seven innings by lefthander Aaron Ashby.
The first baserunner, Matt Cogen, reached on a walk in the second but was promptly erased on a double play. Ogden's first hit was a single to open the fourth from Chris Roller, but with one down he attempted to steal second and the ball was lifted to shallow right field for an easy catch and doubling-up of Roller.
Thanks to the double plays, Ashby faced the minimum through four. Jefrey Souffront, by stroking a double with two out in the fifth, became the first runner left on base, but Ogden wouldn't put anyone else on against Ashby.
Ashby was relieved by another southpaw, Scott Sunitsch, for the final two innings. Sunitsch walked one in the ninth but stranded the runner as a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
The Raptors bats did turn in some loud contact, notably from Daniel Robinson. Robinson lined out three times - once to second base, once to left field and once to center - with nothing to show for it.
the Brewers, meanwhile, put three crooked numbers on the scoreboard. Three hits and an error put three runs on the board in the first against Joel Inoa. After Inoa settled down for the second and third, he was unable to record an out in the fourth while allowing another three runs on two hits, two walks and another pair of errors.
Helena also scored twice in the fifth on two hits, an error and a wild pitch.
The bright spot in the game for Ogden was reliever Elio Serrano, who baffled Helena hitters in pitching the final three innings. He was nearly perfect, giving up just a one-out double in his last frame, the eighth, and working around it.
