Burlington, N.C. - The Burlington Royals controlled Monday's game from the start, scoring three runs in the first inning and holding that lead all game long to beat the Elizabethton Twins 5-1.
E-Twins starter Tyler Benninghoff struggled early, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks in the first, putting the Royals up early 3-0.
Benninghoff cruised through his next three innings, holding Burlington off the board until the fifth inning when he loaded the bases on a single and two more walks. Erik Cha entered the game and surrendered two bases loaded walks to bring in two runs but held the Royals scoreless the remainder of the night.
Cha went 3.2 innings out of the bullpen after Benninghoff, finishing the game and allowing no runs of his own on just one hit with four strikeouts.
First baseman Trevor Jensen homered to open up the third inning, his first pro home run, but that was the only run Elizabethton scored. Left fielder Max Smith went 2-4 with two doubles and catcher Kidany Salva went 2-3, his first multi-hit game of the year, but neither could put a dent in the scoreboard.
The Twins look to even their series with the Royals Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with Ben Gross making his seventh start of the year.
