Offense Keeps 'Hide Alive in Slugfest

LANCASTER - The Visalia Rawhide moved back to within two games of the first-place San Jose Giants by winning a typical slugfest in Lancaster.

The Rawhide topped the defending California League champion JetHawks 12-10 Friday night at the Hangar.

The Rawhide and JetHawks combined for 31 hits, including nine extra-base hits.

Rawhide shortstop Sean Jamieson was 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Jake Lamb hit a two-run home run in the third inning, and Tom Belza knocked in three runs on two hits. Every hitter in the Rawhide starting lineup had at least one hit.

Down 5-3 after three innings, the Rawhide enjoyed an offensive surge in the fourth inning with an eight-run frame to take an 11-5 lead. The JetHawks answered back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-10 Rawhide.

It stayed 11-10 until the Rawhide added an insurance run in the ninth.

Seth Simmons (3-1) earned the win. He blanked the JetHawks for 4 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Simmons took over for Rawhide starter Keith Hessler in the fourth. Hessler was charged wtih 12 hits and 10 runs allowed in 3 2/3 innings.

The Rawhide (32-22) are two games behind San Jose with 16 games left in the first half. They have two more games in Lancaster, then the Rawhide visit the Lake Elsinore Storm for three games. The Rawhide will be home at Recreation Park eight times out of the final 11 first-half games.
