San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - The Stockton Ports hit four home runs in a 9-4 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Ports leadoff batter Bobby Crocker hit the first pitch of the game for a homer and Stockton never looked back en route to taking their second straight game in the series. The loss drops San Jose's record to 34-21 with 15 games remaining in the first half.
Angel Villalona (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) had two hits, including his 14th home run of the season, to lead the Giants offensively.
The Ports built a 5-2 lead after 3 1/2 innings all thanks to the long ball. After Crocker's leadoff homer in the top of the first, Rashun Dixon singled with two outs in the second before B.A. Vollmuth stepped to the plate and crushed an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left for a two-run home run.
San Jose responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 3-2. Jeff Arnold started the frame with a double before John Polonius delivered a one-out RBI double into the left field corner. Shawn Payne followed with another RBI double to make it 3-2, however Stockton starter Deyvi Jimenez retired the next two hitters to keep the Ports in front.
Stockton then hit another home run in the top of the fourth to push their advantage to 5-2. Giants starting pitcher Danny Sandbrink had retired six straight hitters until Dusty Robinson singled with two outs. Dixon followed with a two-run home run to left to increase the Ports lead.
Stockton pushed their lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth against reliever Jose Casilla as Ryan Ortiz doubled with one out before coming home on Robinson's single.
Meanwhile, San Jose didn't advance a runner past first base from the third through the eighth innings. The Giants' only baserunners over the six-inning span were a Villalona infield single in the third and a Bobby Haney single in the bottom of the fifth.
The Ports then hit their fourth and final home run of the game in the top of the ninth. Facing Bryce Bandilla, Dixon led off with a double before Crocker crushed a two-out, two-run homer to left to make it 8-2. Addison Russell followed with a double and then Max Muncy came through with an RBI single for Stockton's ninth run of the night.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mac Williamson was hit by a pitch to leadoff before Villalona lined a two-run homer to left. The home run cut the deficit to 9-4, however Stockton reliever Jonathan Joseph set down the next three hitters to end the game.
Jake Brown (2-2) was credited with the win out of the Ports bullpen after tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Brown, who entered the game to begin the bottom of the fifth, allowed just one hit with no walks and no strikeouts during his stint on the mound.
Sandbrink (0-1) suffered the loss for the Giants in his first start of the season. The right-hander was tagged for five runs (all earned) on six hits in four innings. Sandbrink walked none, struck out none and surrendered three home runs.
