Offense Held to Three Hits
July 29, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers were held to only three hits and were defeated 3-2 by the Tucson Toros at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. The Vipers gave up all three runs in the first inning and would trail for the rest of the game. With the loss Calgary drops to 37-18 overall and 11-5 in the second half but the two records lead the Golden Baseball League as well as the North Division. The game was delayed approximately an hour and a half due to a power surge at the field which caused a technicality with the field lights.
Dallas Mahan (2-3) picked up the tough-luck loss throwing six quality innings and giving up three runs on six hits while striking out four. Todd Moser was solid out of the bullpen for Calgary tossing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit. Vince Davis (1-2) recorded his first victory going seven innings and allowing only two hits for one run. Reid Price (5) took the save with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
Tucson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Skip Adams walked, Junior Spivey tripled, Lino Garcia walked, and Jim Rushford knocked in two runs with a double for a 3-0 lead.
Calgary got a run back in the next half inning as Colin Moro walked, Caonabo Cosme singled, Rick Guarno was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Moro scored when Drew Miller hit into a double-play for a 3-1 game.
The Vipers got within one run at 3-2 in the top of the eighth frame as Fehlandt Lentini doubled, stole third base, and scored on a Nelson Castro sacrifice fly.
This three-game series continues Wednesday July 29th and Thursday July 30th both at 8:00 PM MDT. Calgary will send Hideki Nagasaka (3-0) and Erik Dessau (6-2) to the mound for the two games.
