Seals Clipped By The Capitals

Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Returning to Royal Athletic Park for their final three-game set of the year against the Edmonton Capitals, the Victoria Seals took to the field for game one on Tuesday night. With Mike Johnson (1-1) taking the ball for the Capitals, the Seals looked to Javier Garcia (2-5) for his second start of the season.

Edmonton was first on the board in the series opener when former Seal Carlos Duncan lifted a home run over the right field fence to make the score 1-0 Capitals in the top of the second inning. The visitors would then stretch that lead to three after Garcia left with an injury to his throwing hand, and back-to-back walks to Matt Ceriani and Jorge Cortes set up and RBI single from Mark Okano and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Darryl Brinkley. Still in the top of the third, Edmonton made the score 5-0 thanks to a two-out double from Duncan to cap off the inning.

The Seals would answer back in the bottom of that frame, however, using an error to left fielder Okano to put Bret LeVier on base, before a double from Wilver Perez and a single courtesy of Sergio Pedroza pulled the home side within three at 5-2.

Victoria then drew within one run of the Capitals when LeVier picked up a double in the bottom of the fifth, and Pedroza powered his third home run in the last four games to right field for a 5-4 score.

Still, Edmonton would extend their lead once more with the bases loaded in the sixth, getting one when Travis Wade hit Okano with a pitch, and adding one more to lead 7-4 on a base hit from Darryl Brinkley. The Capitals then polished off their lead in the top of the ninth frame, with a pair of two-run home runs from both Brinkley and Chad Ehrnsberger to cement an 11-4 victory.

Starter Mike Johnson gets credit for his second win of the season for the Capitals, while Javier Garcia takes the loss despite surrendering just the one hit. Both Darryl Brinkley and Carlos Duncan finished 2-for-5 with 3 RBI's in the Edmonton win, while Sergio Pedroza was 2-for-4 wih 3 RBI's of his own in the losing effort.
