Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA (JUNE 2, 2010) - The Dash scored nine runs in the last two innings to put away the Potomac Nationals 9-1 on Tuesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Trailing 1-0 after seven innings, Winston-Salem scored three in the eighth and six more in the ninth to turn a pitchers' duel into a massive offensive onslaught.
With the game still scoreless entering the bottom of the second inning, Robby Jacobson hit a solo home run off Stephen Sauer. It was the second homer in as many days for Jacobson, who entered the series with one all season.
The Winston-Salem (34-18) offense was silent for the majority of the game against Adrian Alaniz, who threw 5.2 innings of scoreless, three-hit baseball. Sauer was almost as good, allowing one run in 6.2 innings. Neither pitcher earned a decision as the game turned the way of the Dash in late innings.
Justin Phillabaum (0-2) entered the game in the eighth inning as the third Potomac (23-29) pitcher of the night. He retired the first man he faced before giving up back-to-back base hits to Justin Greene and Brandon Short. Eduardo Escobar followed with an RBI single to tie the game at one.
Jon Gilmore then hit a slow bouncer to third base. Dan Lyons barehanded the ball, but threw wild to third. The ball rolled into the Potomac bullpen, allowing two runs to score and giving the Dash a 3-1 lead.
The ninth inning turned into a nightmare for new Nationals pitcher Luis Garcia. Luis Sierra reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, and then was sacrificed to second base. After Kyle Shelton singled, Justin Greene hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Sierra.
Short followed with a triple to drive in another run before Escobar picked up another RBI hit. After a Gilmore single and a walk to Seth Loman, Ozzie Lewis lined a two-run single to right, capping the six-run inning.
Kyle Bellamy (2-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for his second win on the road trip. The loss went to Phillabaum, who gave up three runs (two earned) in his lone innings of work.
Winston-Salem snapped its two-game losing streak with the victory, and improved to 3-5 on the trip. With the Dash's win and Salem's 4-0 loss to Lynchburg, Winston's lead in the Southern Division now stands at four games. The team's magic number to clinch the first half division title shrunk to 15 games.
The Dash's nine-game road trip finishes with one more game at Potomac on Wednesday night. RHP Nate Jones (4-1, 4.33) squares off with RHP Brad Peacock (1-6, 4.58) in a 7:03 p.m. start. The Dash pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on June 3 for a four-game series against the Kinston Indians.
