Cats Pounce on Sox for Fourth Straight
June 1, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Neftali Soto had three hits and scored one run and the Hillcats won their fourth straight, 4-0. The win gives Lynchburg its third consecutive series victory.
The fourth proved to be the big inning for the Hillcats. Four of the first five batters had hits, three of them for extra bases. Carlos Mendez led off the inning with a single, followed by a Soto double. With runners on second and third, Kyle Day drove in the first run of the game with a groundout. Jose Gualdron followed with an RBI double, and Gualdron scored on Miguel Rojas' triple to right-center.
In that inning, the Hillcats were 2-for-4 with runners in scoring position, after coming into the game hitting under .250 in those situations.
Salem threatened with runners at second and third and one out in the top of the sixth. That chased starter James Avery from the ballgame. But reliever Nick Christiani struck out the first batter he faced and induced a harmless pop up to end the inning.
The Cats scored again in the eighth. Alex Buchholz led off the inning with a home run that hit off the scoreboard in left field. That made the score 4-0 Lynchburg.
In his third start back from Tommy John Surgery, James Avery had a great outing. He threw five and one-third innings and gave up only four hits, struck out two and walked none. Avery gets credit for the win, his first this season and since the surgery. The bullpen didn't allow a run for the third time in the past four games. That resulted in the Cats' second shutout of the season.
Lynchburg and Salem conclude their series tomorrow night at 7:05 at City Stadium. Jordan Hotchkiss (3-0, 1.38) makes his second start of the season against Brock Huntzinger (5-2, 2.58). It's Win-Win Wednesday, where fans who buy a ticket to the Hillcats game will receive a free general admission ticket to the next Wednesday home game.
