THE HILLCATS: Last night the Hillcats bested the Red Sox 4-3 in 10 innings of action in the opening game of a three-game series at City Stadium...The Hillcats and are now 3-1 on their current six-game homestand and are looking for their third straight series victory tonight...The Cats have matched their longest winning streak of the season by winning three straight and they have also now won five of their seven contests...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 3-5 against the Red Sox thus far this season and are 2-2 at City Stadium...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 160-140 during the regular season, and they are 68-81 in the Hill City...
HAVEN'T WE DONE THIS BEFORE? Lynchburg is in the midst of 13 games in a row that are all against Salem and Frederick...They are playing six at home against the two teams (three against each squad) and then heading on the road to play seven games (four in Frederick and then three at Salem) at the Keys and Sox home parks...The Hillcats began the season with 14 games against only Salem and Frederick as well and they will have a similar stretch at the end of July...
MOODY MAY: The month of May was an up and down one for Lynchburg...They began the month 5-2, then went 3-13 over their next 16 games, only to finish the month with a 5-2 mark and three straight victories to close things out... The Hillcats batted .281 with a team ERA of 3.86 and had a record of 13-17...
CHUTES AND LADDERS: The Hillcats went win less in their first five series of the season (0-4-1), then they won three straight sets, before they went win less again for five series (0-4-1)...The Cats have won back-to-back series and with a win tonight could make it three series victories in a row...
A STRAIGHT WALK-OFF, OLD SCHOOL RULES: Last night Lynchburg won in walk-off fashion with a game-winning RBI walk by INF Carlos Mendez in the bottom of the 10th inning...It was the Hillcats second walk-off victory on this homestand and their fifth of the season...Five of their last eight wins at home have been in walk-off fashion...Last season the Comebacks Cats had five walk-off wins all season...They also though had 23 come from behind wins in the first half of the season, Lynchburg currently has nine through their first 51 games...
NOTHING FOR FREE: After starting the season 0-3 in extra innings, the Hillcats have now won three straight contests that have gone into extras, including two on this homestand...Lynhburg also continued their success in series openers by improving to 11-4 in the first game of a set this season...
IT'S LIKE YOU NEVER LEFT: LHP Kyle Fernandes entered the game in the bottom of the tenth inning with the bases loaded and walked in the game-winning walk-off run...The last time Fernandes was on the mound at City Stadium was when he gave up the game-winning walk-off homer to INF Jose De Los Santos in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two of the Carolina League Championship series...
RELIEF IN SIGHT: The Hillcats bullpen has picked up the win in the last three games for the Cats...Last night RHP Sean Watson earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief...Over the last three games the Lynchburg pen was gone 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA (three earned runs in 19 and 2/3 innings of work) to lower their ERA to 5.29, the lowest it has been that after two games into the season (3.18 ERA)...
DOUBLE TIME: UTIL Cody Puckett smacked his team-leading 18th double of the season on Sunday...He is now tied for second in the league in the category...He is also first in extra-base hits (26) and tied for fourth in slugging percentage (.528) in the CL...His teammate OF Josh Fellhauer is two doubles behind Puckett and is tied for fourth in the circuit...Lynchburg as a team is only four behind Winston-Salem for the most two-baggers in the league...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Stolmy Pimentel was signed by the Red Sox in 2006 out of the Dominican Republic...In 2007 he pitched for the Dominican Red Sox and went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 14 games (13 starts)...The next year he pitched for Short-Season Low-A Lowell and had a 5-2 mark with a 3.14 earned run average...Last season he moved up to full season Low-A Greenville, and posted a 10-7 mark with a 3.82 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) for the Drive...This season Pimentel has progressed to Advanced-A Salem and gone 4-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts...He has gone six hitless innings in two of his last three outings...In his lone appearance against Lynchburg he tossed five scoreless innings and picked up the win at City Stadium on April 13th...
