New York Red Bulls II News Release
MONTREAL (June 6, 2015) - New York Red Bulls II played to a 2-2 draw with FC Montreal on Saturday evening at Stade Saputo. Manolo Sanchez and Leo Stolz each scored for New York, but a Montreal goal in the 90th minute saw the home team take a share of the points.
NYRB II is now 3-5-4 on the season, and 0-2-2 on the road.
New York was off and running early thanks to Sanchez, who brought down a long pass from fellow MLS loanee Stolz just inside the penalty area and launched a rocket from the right side that pinged off the crossbar and in to put NYRB II ahead just four minutes into the contest.
Montreal pulled level in the 25th minute, when Zakaria Messoudi jumped on an errant pass in the New York end, beat his man in the box and played a low cross that was easily finished in front by Alessandro Riggi.
NYRB II pulled ahead again just before the half, when Stolz lined up a free kick from 25 yards out and put a curling shot inside the near post.
The home side threw everything forward in the second stanza, but New York was able to quell the attack for most of the night. Goalkeeper Santiago Castano played a large role in that, making six saves, including a 1-on-1 save midway through the first half and a late save off of a free header in the 88th minute to preserve the lead.
NYRB II held strong almost to the final whistle, but in stoppage time Montreal's Victor Ndiaye was able to get a foot on a loose ball at the top of the New York box and poke a shot through traffic and past a charging Castano to tie the game at two.
NYRB II continues on the road next weekend, for their third of six consecutive games away from home. New York will travel to North Carolina for a meeting with Wilmington Hammerheads FC next Saturday, June 13, at 7 p.m.
The team is next home on July 12 for a meeting with the Harrisburg City Islanders at Rocco B. Commisso field on the campus of Columbia University.
