OC Blues FC Drops Tough Contest to LA
June 6, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
In front of an OC Blues FC record and sellout 3,000 fans in attendance, OC Blues FC battled hard for 90 minutes, but came up short, losing 2-1 to LA Galaxy II.
A first half goal from Raul Mendiola and a second half strike from Kainoa Bailey were enough to defeat the Orange County, whose goal came from Chris Cortez.
In the first half, the action went back and forth, with both sides creating chances. In the 10th minute, Chino Santana had his best opportunity getting ahead on a run, but LA goalkeeper Clement Diop beat him to it. Galaxy's efforts paid off in the 29th minute, as Adonis Amaya crossed a ball into the box that was deflected by Jack McBean. The deflection fell to an unmarked Raul Mendiola, who finished past Pepe Miranda. Chances kept coming for both sides throughout the half, as Andre Auras had an open shot saved by Miranda, and Luka Petricevic got a head on a free kick, but put it over the net.
Orange County came out with extra hunger in the second half. Didier Crettenand fired a ball to the far post, which found the head of Chris Cortez, who notched it into the top corner to equalize in the 54th minute. LA responded about 20 minutes later, when Kainoa Bailey found space and slotted it past Miranda. The Blues tried to equalize a number of times in the last 20 minutes. Didier Crettenand bobbed and weaved through the defense to find Santana in the 77th minute, but Santana's cross to Cortez found Diops grasp. Amani Walker got ahead in the 88th minute, only to be called offside, and a free kick in stoppage time bounced around, but couldn't find the net.
With the loss, Orange County falls to 5-4-1 with 16 points, 5th place in the Western Conference. LA Galaxy II moved to 6-4-1 with 19 points, putting them in 2nd place.
Up next, Orange County has some time to recover and regroup before facing this same LA Galaxy II side again, June 19th at StubHub Center.
