Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The New York Mets announced today that righthanded pitcher Kevin Mulvey, the Mets' first pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft two months ago, will join the Binghamton Mets. Mulvey is expected to make his B-Mets debut Thursday, when he starts against the Erie SeaWolves at NYSEG Stadium.

The 21-year-old was the 62nd overall selection in the draft when the Mets, who did not have a first-round pick, chose him in the second round. Mulvey has one pro appearance under his belt, tossing two scoreless innings Saturday for the Rookie GCL Mets.

The Parlin, NJ native comes to the Mets organization after three seasons at Villanova (PA) University. As a junior this spring, Mulvey earned second-team All-Big East Conference honors after going 3-8 with a team-leading 3.61 ERA in 14 starts, tossing five complete games while striking out 88 in 92 1/3 innings. Villanova scored a run or less in five of his eight losses, including a pair of 1-0 defeats. Mulvey was 14-16 with a 4.43 ERA in 41 career starts for the Wildcats while racking up 222 strikeouts, the most in school history over three years. He was originally a 34th-round selection of St. Louis in the 2003 draft out of Bishop George Ahr (NJ) High School.

Tonight, the Binghamton Mets start a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field. Mulvey will make his B-Mets debut Thursday when the club returns to NYSEG Stadium for their final regular-season homestand, playing five games against Erie before Portland comes to town. Thursday's game will start at 7:00 p.m.
